Hydraulic Hose Ferrules

 

Hose ferrules are crafted to securely attach fittings/couplings to hydraulic hoses like rubber or PVC hoses with a textile braid or steel wire helix reinforcement. Connecting these hoses and additional components such as hose fittings and flanges together makes up the hose assembly, a widely used accessory in hydraulic systems.

A hose assembly links hydraulic parts within a hydraulic system with a temperature range from -40℃ to +100℃. It enables the movement of high-pressure liquids, such as water, gas, oil, etc., to ensure the efficient transfer of liquid energy.

The ferrule links the end components to the hose, providing a weatherproof barrier to guard against environmental elements. It is generally designed using carbon or stainless steel and may sometimes be plated or treated with a coating to prevent corrosion and chemical degradation.

Hose fittings come in two varieties: one-piece designs, in which the nipple and ferrule are pre-crimped together, and two-piece designs, with a separate hose nipple and ferrule joined via crimping. If the hose and sleeve don't match or are of the wrong size, leaks can occur, regardless of the quality of either.

How do you measure a hydraulic ferrule?
Insert the hose barb into the hose and measure the O.D. (outside diameter) over the inserted hose barb, then add from .005" up to .025" to that measurement. Use that figure for the I.D (inside diameter) of the ferrule.

Ferrules made from mild steel increase their malleability, which is beneficial when assembling hoses. To prevent corrosion or rust in harsh environments, materials such as stainless steel, copper, and others are commonly used.

Machines are used to assemble Ferrules with as permanent connection. Skiving, a process which involves removing part of the hydraulic hose cover and/or inner tube, allows the ferrule to 'bite' the wire braiding of the hose instead of merely crimping onto the hose cover. Single skive, or external skiving, is required for medium-pressure hose fittings. Non Skive systems are best for low and medium-pressure applications, while higher-pressure hoses may need both external and internal skiving.

R7, R8 Non Skive Ferrule - This ferrule is ideal for use with R7/R8 hose. It is lightweight and flexible with a smooth inner tube.

PTFE - or Polytetrafluoroethylene - helps expand temperature and chemical resistance, along with flexibility and shock absorption in stainless steel-braided hoses and rubber hoses.resistance.

1SN, 2SN, 2SC Non Skive Ferrule - Compatible for 1 wire hydraulic, 2 wire hydraulic and 2 wire compact hoses, Ferrules can handle high and medium pressures. 1SN hose features a single braid of high tensile steel and the 2SN features two braids. 2SC is reinforced with steel wire, and is designed with a smaller outside diameter than 2SN making it ideal for cramped spaces.

R12, R13, R15, 4SP & 4SH Non Skive Multispiral Ferrule - Ferrules are suitable for use in high pressure, multi spiral hoses, such as R12, 4SP, and 4SH. R12 is a four-wire spiral hydraulic hose, while 4SP and 4SH are medium- and high-pressure hoses respectively, both with four plies of steel wire spiral. Furthermore, W-Series fittings do not require skiving, and these Ferrules are ideal for use in applications involving petroleum and water-based hydraulic fluids at very high pressures.

R17 & 1SC Non Skive Ferrule – This ferrule is ideal for use with R17 & 1SC hose. 1SC compact hose has a smaller outer diameter compared to 1SN, making it well-suited for installations in tight, narrow spaces.
